Panel Discussion on Migration and Book Presentation of The SCOPUS Diaries

Panel Discussion on Migration and Book Presentation of The SCOPUS Diaries

SSH, NU Library, and "Public Opinion" Research Institute present

  • Panel discussion on migration - 14 PM-16 PM:

Keynote speaker António Mendonça «Central Asian Migrants in Western Europe: Numbers, Mobilities, Profiles, Identities»

What do we know about Central Asian Migrants in Western Europe? With few exceptions, as the ethnic Germans exiled to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan by Stalin's fears and returned to Germany following the opening of Soviet borders, we know very little. And yet, especially from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and also Kyrgyzstan, there are communities present in almost every country in Western Europe - from farm workers picking apples and chestnuts in Portugal to students in German or English universities, from masons in Finland to the oligarchs of luxury resorts on the Mediterranean coast. This presentation will try to introduce some of these groups - with a special focus on those living in Portugal and Spain -, analysing their integration in Russian-speaking local economies and Diaspora(s), and also questioning their motivations, perceptions and future prospects - namely, those related to a possible return to their Motherland.

With new migration research from:

Botagoz Rakisheva (Director of “Public Opinion” Research Institute), Darina Sadvokassova (Eurasian Studies PhD student, Nazarbayev University), and Caress Schenk (Associate Professor of Political Science, Nazarbayev University)

Antonio Mendonca is a Portuguese senior anthropologist, presently working at the IGOT (Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon) as a project researcher in the area of Migrations, with a special focus on Post-soviet migrants in Portugal. Previously, he has lectured at the Universities of Algarve and Lusófona (Portugal) and of Ankara (Turkey), and taught at the Professional School of Heritage Sciences (Lisbon, Portugal).

  • Book Presentation of The SCOPUS Diaries and the (il)logics of Academic Survival by Abel Polese - 16 PM-17 PM

Now that academics are required to be teachers, managers, media catalyzers, analysts, fundraisers, and social media animals: How do you strike a good balance between what is expected from you and what you want to do? What conferences to attend? How to find the money to go there? Is it worth it to act as a peer reviewer? What publishers are best to target? Is publishing a chapter in an edited book worth the work? This book is intended to help scholars to design and think strategically about their own career. Beginning with “How to get published in good journals,” it explores a number of questions that most academics encounter at various stages of their careers.

Abel Polese is a researcher, trainer, writer, manager and fundraiser dealing with development and capacity building in Europe and Asia. He is also interested in Science Excellence, Open Science and alternatives indicators to measure science performance and is the author of “The SCOPUS Diaries and the (il)logics of Academic Survival”, a reflection on academic life, research careers and the choices and obstacles young scholars face at the beginning of their career. You can find him, and learn about next #scopusdiaries workshops, on Twitter at @Abiquitous and @scopusdiaries.
