About the book:
Advancements in Underground Infrastructures presents advanced modelling tools and experimental techniques used in underground infrastructure development. It explores mathematical approaches, experimental methods, and data-driven models, along with the latest technological advancements in underground engineering aimed at enhancing the safety and stability of underground structures. The book also addresses the application of the circular economy model in underground engineering.

About the author:
Dr. Saffet YAGIZ holds an MSc degree from the University of Missouri (1997) and a PhD degree from Colorado School of Mines (CSM, 2002), USA. His main research interests are geomechanics, rock mechanics, mechanized excavation-tunnelling, rock mass characteristics and testing, performance analysis of mechanical excavators, and geo-technical site investigation and drilling. He has authored over 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals, proceedings, reports, and books. He is a recognized reviewer of many geotechnical engineering journals and an editorial board member of Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology. He has participated in a lot of scientific meetings as a keynote, organizer, session chair, invited speaker, speaker, scientific committee member, or participant. He is a recognized professional researcher with over 25 years’ experience. He is known for the studies of developing the Modified CSM Model and TBM performance prediction formulas and for proposing a rock brittleness index and classification for rock mechanics and excavation. He has been on the list of the top 2% of the world’s most widely cited scientists for the fifth consecutive year (2020–2024). He was awarded the Nazarbayev University Senate Service Award (2020) due to outstanding contributions to the university. Also, he was recognized by the Scopus Elsevier Excellence Award in 2022. He was awarded by the National Science and Higher Education Council of Kazakhstan due to outstanding contribution of the science and higher education of the country (2024). He is a leader of the Rock Excavation and Automation Research Group and a professional member of the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (ISRM).
